Hi, I am David. I am from Italy and I am a PhD student at the University of Calgary. I have obtained my Bachelor's and Master's degree in Aerospace engineering at the Politecnico di Torino. My PhD project is about the development of a numerical framework for investigating high-speed compressible flows around complex 3D geometries. I hope that this summer school will give me all the necessary tools, knowledge and tips to help me to reach my objectives. I like hiking and I love travelling (in fact I planned to go to Tokyo for two days after the summer school, feel free to join me). I am looking forward to meet you all in Japan.

by Daniel Weindl -

Hi all,

I am Daniel. I am from Munich, Germany. I am a biologist by training and currently I am working as a post-doc on computational modelling of biochemical pathways, mostly in the context of cancer. On the technical side, this is mostly about efficient parameter estimation for large ordinary differential equation models.
Looking forward to meeting you in Kobe and having interesting discussions. As this will be my first time in Japan, I am also very much looking forward to some sightseeing and enjoying the local cuisine.

Daniel

Re: Introductions Forum

by Loizos Koutsantonis -
Dear all,

I am Loizos Koutsantonis, I am a physicist and I currently work as a post-doctoral fellow in image reconstruction and inverse problems. My PhD is on Image Reconstruction for Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography. My professional interests are medical image reconstruction, infrared imaging, machine learning and neural nets, control systems, simulations and data analysis using HPC. From this summer school, I hope to learn different GPU acceleration techniques for forward modeling of different imaging problems featuring complex propagation of photons. It is a proble similar to ray tracing suffering from different physical effect sauch as the abbsorption and scattering of photons in matter.
Finally I am a fanatic night photographer and I will be gratefull if anyone of you is interested to follow me to take some pictures of Kobe.

Best
Loizos

Re: Introductions Forum

by Ugo Niccolò Di Carlo -
Hi! I'm Ugo and I am from Italy. I am a PhD student in astrophysics at INAF and INFN Padova and at University of Insubria.
In my project I investigate how binary black holes form and merge via emission of gravitational waves. I do so using N-body simulations of star clusters, which allow me to reproduce the complex dynamics of such dense systems. I hope this school will help me to improve my work, especially for the data visualization part.
I like videogames, music (especially progressive rock, death and black metal), I play drums, I love cooking and I like photography (even if I'm just a newbie).
I can't wait to be there to meet you all!

Ugo

Hi all,
I'm Duy from Hochiminh city, Vietnam. I completed my PhD in Computational Biology and Medical Sciences at The University of Tokyo, spending one year working as researcher at Tokyo Institute of Technology, and a bit time worked as postdoc at The University of Tokyo again at the time of application to this Summer School, and recently been promoted and moved to Tokyo Institute of Technology, School of Life Science and Technology. Japan has already kept my 5 year youth and seems to do it more. I am interested in computational biophysics with additional knowledge from data science, and other fields.
See you soon.

by Danielle Skinner -
Hey all,

I'm Danielle! I'm from Atlanta, Georgia in the USA where I am a PhD student at the Georgia Institute of Techhnology. I received my Bachelors degree in Physics and Astronomy with minors in Mathematics and Philosophy from the University of Washington in Seattle, and my Masters in Physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology. I am a part of the computational cosmology group where we use simulations to study the early universe. I recently finished a project looking at the formation sites of the first generation of stars, which is what I will present at the workshop. My next project will be focusing on merging neutron stars. When I'm not doing research, I love playing video games, knitting, and hanging out with my kitties! I also absolutely love Japan and am so excited to have the opportunity to visit again.

I will be arriving in Japan on June 6th, so if anyone wants to get together that night or the next day, let me know! Excited to meet everyone.

Hi all,

I am Subashiny. I am from Paris, France. I am a first year computer science PhD student at Telecom SudParis, a french engineering college. I also got my engineering degree (equal to MSc) from Telecom SudParis. My PhD thesis is "A domain specific language to enforce privacy". As a first part of my thesis, I adapt LLVM compilers to compile the new language. I hope this summer school not only develop my technical skills but also create interesting meetings to share knowledge.

This is my first time in Japan and looking forward to meet you all.

Rabiya Noori

by Rabiya Noori -
Hi everyone!

I'm Rabiya and I'm from Toronto, Canada. I'm currently a masters student in Biomedical Engineering and my research area is in computational neuroscience. I'm using HPC to simulate brain activity and explore how temporal delays in the interactions of different brain regions affect the overall dynamics. Parallel programming is a big part of my work, and I'm looking really forward to the school so I can learn more HPC techniques to apply to my research! I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone and visiting Japan for the first time! I'll actually be staying back after the school to travel, you're welcome to join me smile

by Jamie Quinn -
Hey all!

I'm Jamie, from Glasgow and I'm currently a PhD student at the University of Glasgow working studying viscosity in the solar atmosphere via fairly large magnetohydrodynamics simulations. I've recently become quite interested in the intersection of machine learning and fluids as part of my work with Hydroquo, a company with the sole aim of improving water quality in Bangladesh by providing real-time monitoring of local water supplies. Computer art is a passion of mine (http://art.jamiejquinn.com/) so if anyone has some beautiful visualisations of data, I'd love to see it!

Looking forward to meeting you all this week.

Cheers,
Jamie
